Painting with a big brush and lots of paint

The Creation of a New Watercolor by JR Monks

I want to share with you a little of my watercolor painting process. Recently I created a new full sheet watercolor and took a few progress images along the way. Each painting presents new challenges; however, I generally work from light to dark, background to foreground, and save room for a few surprises! I hope you enjoy looking at the progress of this new work.

Usually I start with the sky in my landscape work. I believe the sky establishes the mood and is very important.

While I generally work from far to near, this time I couldn't wait to get into the rocks!

Notice how I varied the brushstrokes and the values and temperatures of the color. I don't want a simple wash here.

Now I am in the distant mountains and the distant and mid-distant trees.

The last stage is the foreground- I am looking for a good lead in and variety here but not too much attention as I want the focus to be on the rocks.

Thank you and until next time, thank you for taking the journey with me.
