Winter can be serene; however, the harsh reality for the people in this scene was bitter cold and difficulty obtaining food. The lodges were outfitted with hide or cloth liners between the outer walls and the interior space. Willows were woven between stakes driven around the perimeter of each lodge to create a wind barrier and fires were kept stoked. Anyone who has camped in the winter in the most modern of gear can really appreciate the strength, courage, and resourcefulness of these incredible survivors.
